Broader Impacts
Providing up-to-date information to the public
We conduct research on the fundamentals of bear biology and ecology and bring that information to the public in Scandinavia via webinars, news articles, interviews, books, and other outreach efforts.
Helping translate research into management actions
For the past 40 years, the SBBRP has been providing managers in Scandinavia with evidence-based information that has been directly incorporated into management decisions and actions.
Working with local communities
We have worked with local communities across Scandinavia to help answer pressing questions related to bear management such as the effects of bear predation on domestic and semi-domestic livestock (e.g., sheep and reindeer) and local ungulate populations (e.g., moose).
Helping advance
human medicine
We began exploring the capacity for brown bear serve as a translational model for understanding human health and disease about 15 years ago. Our research efforts have since led to unique breakthroughs in our understanding of human health issues related to sedentary lifestyles.
Helping managers train working dogs
We work with managers in Scandinavia to help train their working dogs in the context of bear management.
Helping improve
animal welfare
Our research program has led the way in developing and refining safe and humane animal capture and immobilization techniques, helping improve the welfare of wild animals that are part of biology research programs around the world.
